The 2008 Infiniti G37: More horsepower, better interior, but more weight

March 23rd, 2007

Infiniti G37 Front View

The 2008 Infiniti G37 Coupe is the successor of the Infiniti G35, which is one of Nissan/Infiniti’s best selling cars. It’s a car I’ve been raving about it to my friends since I heard it a few months ago. I’d definately like to get my hands on one.

The first thing I’d like to point out about the new car is the front’s aesthetics. The front headlights are shaped much more aggressively and I think that’s awesome. In the past, they had these awkward bug-eyed looking headlights that made me think that if they didn’t have them, I would be driving one right now. It’s because I think the rear tail lights are the most well designed of all the imports, with the Toyota Altezza’s (Lexus IS300, which has styling close to perfection) close behind. Why? Personal preference. Everyone has their own, and I’m merely stating mine. The G37 will also have ANGEL EYES, which are a spectacular addition and will make it really stand out at night.

The second think I’d like to point out the increase in horsepower. It used to be 275 hp and will be going up to 330 hp. On top of this, it’s mpg is actually going to increase!

The G37 will be available with a 6-speed manual transmission (6MT) or a 5-speed automatic 6MT and sport-pack automatics. Of course, I’d opt for the manual transmission as it’s more fun to drive and after you get used to it – it isn’t bothersome, it’ll be built into your routine and automated.

The Bavian Motor Works (BMW) M3 at the Geneva Motor Show

March 7th, 2007

Recently, BMW revealed the M3 Concept at the Geneva Motor Show in Switzerland. The car features a high-revving V8 powerplant, tuned suspension, a six-speed manual transmission (which is preferable to “more traditional” drivers i.e old people that marketing targets), a carbon fiber roof, and all the exterior modifications typical of an “M” car.

Ah, what I would’ve given to go there! The M3 is one of my favorite cars. It is known for it’s sickeningly quick, beautifully designed engines and handling. Not to mention the exquisite design and sporty two door look. One of the gripes I have are the totally unaggressive headlights. It’s a monster, they need monstrous headlights, but I suspect that their target audience are older people, like 35+ who don’t care about aggressiveness and want refined looks. They’re the ones that can afford it, so it’s probably a smart move by marketing. 240sx enthusiasts like to cry about how it’s not in the spirit of the sport that such expensive cars which cost an arm and leg to modify should be allowed to compete at the track.

BMW has not disclosed the final horsepower rating, but the production M3 is expected to have between 425 and 450 horsepower. Its engine is derived directly from the V10 used in the M5 and M6.

Reminiscent of the carbon fiber roof panel used on the M6 coupe, the M3’s CFRP roof cuts unnecessary weight, and lowers the car’s center of gravity. It also lets the roof edge appear flatter and thus lowers the perceived body height. I personally hate how there’s a bulge on the hood. However, I suspect it’s there for a reason. BMW has no reason to offer styling cues for no reason.

Wide wheel arches, together with the forged 19-inch light alloy rims in the classic Y-spoke design, emphasize the vehicle’s wide track.

The production version of the M3 coupe is expected to be very similar to this thinly-veiled “concept.” It will arrive in showrooms later this year, and will be followed by a convertible variant in 2008. The new M3 is expected to cost somewhat more than the outgoing E46 model, but should remain competitive with the Lexus IS-F and Audi RS4.
