SEO vs PPC in terms of results

June 18th, 2008

SEO is search engine optimization, specifically talking about organic results (search engine results) you see when you enter a keyword into a search engine.

PPC (Pay-per-click) is paying a set amount per click for a sponsored result above the organic results.

Which is better? Ideally, you would use both, but let’s take a look at some of the pros and cons of each.

SEO Organic Traffic (pros)

  • Longer term traffic
  • Free

SEO Organic Traffic (cons)

  • Harder to get started in, takes longer to see/get results
  • May cost a lot of money to get to top rankings for competitive niches

Pay-per-click (pros)

  • Can quickly get high rankings in a short amount of time
  • Can be targeted to the demographic/geographic that you want

Pay-per-click (cons)

  • Can eat up a lot of your budget fast if you’re not careful
  • Competition can quickly arise
